VITALAS at "ICT 2008" event, 25-27 November, Lyon, France |

VITALAS project presented its first multimedia search engine prototype during one of the largest research events in Europe in 2008: the "ICT 2008" event, organised by the Information Society and media Directorate-General in conjunction with the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research, and with the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Employment. The event hosted leading visionaries from academia and industry and addressed topics as diverse as Europe's role in shaping the future internet, ICT's contribution to advancing the sustainability agenda and alternative research paths for future ICT components and systems. At this occasion, the November 2008 issue of eStrategies Europe Magazine (Vol 2 No 4 pp.84-85), has been distributed to visitors, who could read an article related to VITALAS, entitled " The search goes on for more efficient retrieval methods ". |

Next Generation of Multimedia Search Engine: VITALAS first showing, a NEM exclusive |

During the 2008 NEM Summit "Towards Future Media Internet", a major conference and exhibition devoted to the field of Networked and Electronic Media and ICT at large, which this year took place on October 13-15 in Saint-Malo, France, the VITALAS project presented its first multimedia search engine prototype.
Currently the demonstration aims to show search functionalities on 10,000 pictures set provided by the Belga photo agency which could be updated by incremental indexing of external new incoming visual content. Next steps of VITALAS progress will consist on the integration of cross-media content enrichment and retrieval functionalities for 10,000 hours of video material and 3,000,000 of images.

VITALAS Internal Awareness Workshop |
The VITALAS project has organized an internal Awareness Workshop on 21 February 2008 at IRT premises, Munich, Germany.
The objective was to invite users from IRT, INA, Belga and AFP, as well as their "close user community" to discover the VITALAS functionalities/objectives. The audience was staff from IRT's associates (editors, journalists, annotators, archivists), archivists from INA, picture editors and sales managers from Belga and their shareholders and at last press employees from AFP.
The participants will be asked to give their feedback through a questionnaire, which will also allow the definition of success criteria for VITALAS. |

MCVC'08 Cannes (MUSCLE Conference joint with VITALAS Conference) |

The first VITALAS conference was held at Palais Stéphanie in Cannes, France, on 11 & 12 February 2008, jointly with the final conference of the MUSCLE EU funded Network of Excellence.
This scientific conference is opened to members of communities in the field of Multimedia Understanding through Semantics, Computation and Machine Learning.
